West African Fon Ceremonial Axe

Carved wooden shaft and animal head with a hand forged axe blade protruding from the open mouth. This axe would represent the king when carried by a messenger. Thus the messenger would be accepted with respect and obedience. Used ceremonially, Fon people (Benin) West Africa
